Pooja Room Vastu: The Best Place for the Pooja Room at Home
Vastu places the pooja room in the north-east corner of the house, the Eshanya Moola. Here is why, which way to face while praying, and how we fit a pooja space into small and large homes.

Almost every home we design in Chennai has a pooja room or a pooja space. Its position is usually the second Vastu decision after the main door.
The north-east: Eshanya Moola
The north-east corner of the house is called the Eshanya Moola and is considered the most sacred corner in Vastu. It receives the first light of the day, which is why it is the preferred place for the pooja room.
Vastu guidelines for the pooja room
- Best position: the north-east corner. The east and the north are also accepted.
- While praying: face east or north.
- Avoid: a pooja room under a staircase, or sharing a wall with a toilet.
- Bedrooms: a separate pooja space is preferred over one inside a bedroom.
- Keep it: clean, well lit and free of storage.
How it looks on a real plan
In this duplex residence in Medavakkam the puja room is on the ground floor, next to the living and dining areas and close to the parent bedroom, so the elders of the family can reach it without using the stairs.

When there is no space for a separate room
In a compact house or a flat, a full pooja room is not always possible. A pooja unit or a niche in the north-east part of the living or dining area follows the same principle and takes very little floor space.
